    Finally – a true successor to the M50. It’s great., September 7, 2015

After several disappointing headsets, I had discovered the Plantronics M50. It was the first one to work well – good price, long battery life, easy and reliable to use, very comfortable to wear. Just read the 20000+ reviews on the M50 on Amazon here. Unfortunately, the M50 is being discontinued, and prices are increasing. There is a newer version, M55, but it doesn’t have the same proven design as the M50.
This headset, the Explorer 50, is the true successor to the M50. It has all the same qualities that made the M50 famous, including a good price and so comfortable to wear that you’ll probably forget it’s still in your ear. It even has a very useful new feature: Hold the volume button for 2 seconds, and it will announce “Mute: On” to indicate your mic is muted. Hold it again for 2 seconds, you’ll hear “Mute: Off”. Perfect.
So for all of you who are looking for a worthy replacement of the Plantronics M50: The Explorer 50 is it. I have both. They are virtually identical, the Explorer 50 has the mute function, and the call accept button is a little smaller and harder to press by accident, which is probably a good thing. The M50 used to redial once in a while when squeezed in my pocket after I forgot to turn it off, I think this is less likely to happen with the Explorer 50.
So thank you, Plantronics, for continuing this proven design with just some minimal tweaks (smaller call button, mute function). If it aint broke, don’t fix it. I hope this headset will be available for a long time to come, maybe I’ll buy another one just as a spare.

I recently purchased this bluetooth headset to replace my previous Plantronics one that accidentally went through the wash. The price is more than reasonable & overall it’s not a bad device, but it will take a little getting used to. I think my biggest complaint would be the button configuration & placement. You see, for whatever reason Plantronics has replaced the easy to use one & done button on the front of the device with a medley of switches & buttons in odd places. To power on, you must now use a rocker switch located on the bottom of the device – feels very awkward when in the ear. Volume controls are on the top, and the communicator button is flush on the front of the device. Want to use voice activated features? Wait for two beeps on that communicator beep, otherwise Siri or whatever will not engage. The other issue I have is the volume, it’s not horrendous but it should be louder than it is, older models were much louder.

On the positive side, I love the fact that this device will play your ringtone when you get a call instead of an obnoxious beep, and the fact that it will play music/other sounds from your phone is also quite nice – something I wish my last one had.

I’ve gone from the M-50/M-55. Now using the M70. I’ve owned other much more expensive Bluetooth ear pieces and these have been the very best! I forget I have it in my ear their so light and comfortable. People I’m talking with can’t believe I’m using an ear piece to take their cal the sound is that clear.
